Why Self Evaluation Is Important as a Small Business
Phenomenal One Press has been in the publishing business since a time when it wasn’t cool to self publish or start a small press. Running a publishing business based on paperback book sales at the time was challenging. We started before the ebook market took off and opened up possibilities for many new authors and small publishers. Then the POD (print on demand) business became obtainable and much improved. Still, Phenomenal One Press, continued to adjust, stay determined and thrive with the times. At that time we used Bookmasters and Ingram to distribute our books. Then Smashwords and Kindle Direct Publishing for our ebook distribution. We shied away from the newcomers of Draft2Digital and some others as we had limited funds, talent and time to learn new platforms. Constantly, self-evaluating our company, our goals, the budget and redefining ourselves every year.
New Visions Should Stay Realistic
With these constant changes in the market, we wanted to hop on all of them. However, staying back, doing what we know, but researching and watching the changing trends allowed the endeavors to be profitable, and positively impactful on our progress. However, we’ve watched more ambitious press that we respected, go after building their list of authors, only to be unable to sustain the growth. It happens, and authors can tend to be rather sensitive and verbal about displeasure, yet the publisher had invested the time, the money, the marketing and the health of their business for the success of all. Phenomenal One Press had only taken on two authors and did projects with some since finding the right fit wasn’t easy.
Shaping for The Next Market Change
As Amazon changes its algorithms, business focus, many authors and small press felt the hit with their books being removed, it affected the indie community widely. Phenomenal One Press decided it was time to revise our website to sell directly from our own online store instead of using our website as a landing page for other distributors.
